Mission
The Dallas County Conservation Foundation
is a private, nonprofit organization, whose mission is dedicated
to conserving the natural and cultural resources of Dallas County
and the central Iowa region. The Foundation focuses on preserving
environmental qualities, community relationships, and promoting
long term sustainable futures of the Raccoon River watershed.
Conservation Movement
With continued support from many people
in Dallas County and the larger surrounding region, the Foundation
has established itself as a working partner with Dallas County.
The Conservation program is active and progressive and second to
none in Iowa.
The Foundations purpose is to develop
and implement projects and fully support the conservation movement
in central Iowa. In Dallas County, the Raccoon River Greenbelt,
Voas Nature Area, Hanging Rock, Kuehn Conservation Area, Raccoon
River Valley Trail, Big Bend, Forest Park Museum, and the Native
American Celebration have been primary beneficiaries of funded projects.
The Foundation supports grants, development projects, natural resource
programs, volunteer program, and places environmental education
in the forefront of learning and environmental stewardship in Dallas
County.
Raccoon River Greenbelt
The Raccoon River Greenbelt is the largest
project supported by the Foundation. The Greenbelt is the premier
example of a long range ecological and cultural program to protect
land and associated rivers and streams through environmental education,
defining critical resource districts, protecting rare and endangered
species, protecting water quality, and preserving and interpreting
history and archaeology.
Support
The Foundation is supported by the people
of Dallas County and surrounding region. Several large endowments
of land and funded projects have given Dallas County a favorable
edge in competing for remaining open space, protecting our environment,
educating our citizens and revitalizing our lives through history,
culture, and the environment.
Methods of support to conservation include:
monetary, volunteering, endowments of land or other resources. The
Foundation holds land only if requested by the donor. If there is
not a preference the land will be deeded to Dallas County Conservation
and become part of the Conservation Land Trust in the Dallas County
Park system. Examples include the Voas Nature Area and Earth Science
Museum, Kuehn Conservation Area, Upper area of Hanging Rock by Ann
Godwin, and the Hans Glissman Center.
